Mr Li:
I recently spent a lot of money and energy in order to apply for my a girlfriend and her son to come to the Netherlands. After a few weeks being here, she reported to the police that I had raped her and physically abused her. Based on her one-sided accusations, I was sent to jail twice. After two weeks in jail, I came back to an almost-empty home. The government had arranged a secret place for her to live. She took everything that she possibly could, even oil and salt. I feel so unjust because I am innocent. I worked hard to bring her and her son to the Netherlands. In order to get a Dutch residency, she not only cheated me but also slandered me and caused me to be imprisoned. After I went to jail, I lost my job and my livelihood is a problem.
I have thought about committing suicide twice because she has caused me so much pain and troubles. My life now is a suffering.
Lin:
In my opinion, the Dutch government only looks after the employers. If employers fulfill their duties to pay their taxes on time, then government does not concern about the labor affairs in the restaurant. I have worked in the Netherlands for more than ten years and I have only been checked once by the Labor Inpectorate. But many bosses take advantage of labour migrants.
When one of my colleagues had a hand injury at work, my boss used someone else’s medical cards for his hospital treatment because the boss did not buy health insurance for this employee. My boss also did not allow employees to take sick leave, so when my colleague was seriously ill, he could not rest properly. He was called back to work the next day after his treatment at the hospital.
Some bosses apply two bank cards for their employees, they transfer salary into one account and then return money back to themselves with the other account. Some bosses are fully aware of the labour laws but they decide to implement their own set of rules at work.
Sometimes a labor migrant is entitled to health insurance allowance. The employer puts this money in his own pocket instead of giving it to the employees.
A few colleagues I know have gone back to China because of their perception that the working conditions in the Netherlands are inhumane.
Many labor migrants depend on their employers because they do not know the laws and regulations and do not speak the language. Thus they are forced to tolerate and accept substandard working condtions.
